Jonathan Smucker

The tenor Jonathan Smucker has sung more than forty roles in opera, oratorio, operetta, and musical theater, including leading roles by Handel, Mozart, Rossini, and Gilbert and Sullivan.  His recent credits include Evangelist (St. John Passion) with Vallejo Choral Society, Acis (Acis and Galatea) with Marin Oratorio, Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with West Bay OperaTamino (The Magic Flute) with Pocket Opera, St. Chavez (Four Saints in Three Acts) with Opera ParallèleScaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos) with West Edge Opera, and tenor soloist in Dioclesian with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.  In demand throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and the United States, he has appeared as soloist with Festival Opera, San Francisco Opera Guild, Opera San Jose, Opera San Luis Obispo, Townsend Opera, Livermore Valley Opera, Ash Lawn Opera Festival, Music in the Mountains, and at Stanford and Dominican universities, and at UC Berkeley, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz.

Smucker also performs regularly in recital, with a specialty in vocal chamber music.  As a member of The Vinaccesi Ensemble, he has appeared on recital series including Old First Concerts, Noontime Concerts, and the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition Fringe, and is featured on their debut recording, Benedetto Vinaccesi: The Solo Cantatas, available on Centaur Records.   Other recital appearances include Brahms Liebeslieder Walzer for Music at Meyer, and Haydn and Schubert duets on the San Francisco Community Music Center’s Faculty Chamber Music Series.

Originally from Ohio, Smucker earned Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Postgraduate degrees in voice at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He is a graduate of the Aspen Opera Theater Center and the Interlochen Arts Academy.
